Tabular Editor announces leadership transition: Daniel Otykier steps down as CTO, remains co-founder and advisor

Tabular Editor today announces a change in its leadership team. Daniel Otykier, co-founder and CTO, is stepping down from the CTO role effective November 4.

He continues with the company as co-founder and advisor in a part-time role, where he remains a central part of the roadmap and ongoing development of Tabular Editor 3, without the management responsibilities of the CTO role. Peer Grønnerup, currently Head of Engineering, becomes the company's new CTO.

Why now?

"Ever since inception, Daniel has been transparent about his timeline," says Søren Joensen, CEO and co-founder of Tabular Editor.

"Over the past two years, we have matured our organization from a start-up to an actual company. We have onboarded new colleagues with specific skill sets, and we are in a solid place to drive this forward. The way knowledge has been transferred, and the organization has been prepared to move forward without Daniel as CTO, lets me sleep well at night."

Tabular Editor started as two friends building a tool the community needed. Today that community spans more than 130 countries, and the company behind it has grown from a handful of people to a full, specialized team.

Daniel's decision to step back is as much about that growth as it is about his own next chapter.

In Daniel's own words

"It was never really about the product. That's just a piece of software," says Daniel.

"What I’ll miss most about the CTO role is representing Tabular Editor at conferences and community events, talking to customers, and hearing the stories about how Tabular Editor made their lives easier. What ultimately made the decision hard was the people in the company and our culture."

Daniel has spent the past several years balancing his role at Tabular Editor with a growing family. Staying on as co-founder and advisor keeps him close to the product and the team without the day-to-day demands of the CTO role.

"I may have started out as Mr. Tabular Editor, but today there’s a full-grown, mature team behind it that's more than capable of building on what we started," Daniel says.

"When I decided to step down as CTO and realized that we would have to find someone to fill the role, there wasn't a second of doubt in my mind," Daniel adds. "Peer was the obvious candidate."

Peer steps up

Peer has been with Tabular Editor since 2025, most recently as Head of Engineering, and has known Daniel and Søren for more than a decade through their shared background as consultants.

"Daniel and I go back more than ten years," Peer says. "He's a close friend, and he was one of the main reasons I joined Tabular Editor. So my first reaction wasn't really about the CTO role at all. It was about Daniel."

On stepping into the role itself, Peer is direct about what he sees as his task.

"Tabular Editor is not Daniel, and Daniel is not Tabular Editor. He has an enormous legacy in the community, and he's a familiar face at every conference. Those are big shoes to fill, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise. But the product, the team, and the mission stand on their own, and my job now is to carry that forward."

A team, not a single person

Alongside Peer as CTO, Greg Baldini becomes Lead Architect, and Jeroen ter Heerdt leads the product side as CPO. Søren points to this wider team as proof that the company doesn't rest on any single person.

"Daniel is a technical authority in our community, and he will still be. Both Peer and Greg are well known in the community for their technical authority. Adding Jeroen to that equation on the product side makes me proud and completely sure that what we've built is truly sustainable, and bigger than any one person."

Peer describes his approach to the community, which he sees as core to how the product develops.

"The community isn't a marketing channel for us. It's part of how the product actually gets better. Some of the sharpest thinking about Tabular Editor happens outside our walls, and we'd be foolish not to engage with that seriously. I plan to be a face people can meet at conferences, in the community spaces, and in the conversations that shape how our product evolves."

What stays the same

"Daniel and I started the company, and we wanted our values to be visible in it," Søren says.

"We will stay true to the company DNA, the high bar for quality in our software, and our integrity towards our users. Daniel, Peer, and I have worked together for a long time. We are all cut from the same cloth.”

Effective November 4, Peer Grønnerup becomes CTO, with Daniel Otykier continuing as co-founder and advisor. What comes next looks a lot like what came before: the same team, building the same thing.
